Trees, tree roots and sewer facts....

  • Sewer pipes deteriorate with age or can often separate and crack due to ground shifting and heaving. (Video inspection can determine condition of your lines)
  • Roots from trees growing near your sewer lines can gain entry through cracked portions of sewer pipes. Sewer lines are typically laid 2 metres in depth, or more.
  • The tree roots at that depth are referred to as tree "anchor roots".  The "Feeder Roots" are finer hair like roots that are fibrous are usually located within the first metre of soil.
  • Anchor roots can surround intact sewer pipes indefinitely without causing blockages- its the cracks in your pipes that cause problems.
  • A cracked sewer line allows sewage & water  to leak and air to escape into the ground, creating the right air, water and nutrient conditions at that depth similar to the surface.
  • Anchor roots at the site of the line leak then can grow very fine feeder roots that can enter the sewer pipe and create blockages.

What about city owned trees blocking my sewer line?

Unfortunately, the property owner is responsible for sewer lines from your building to sewer main hookup. This can include portions if the sewer line under city sidewalks & roads! You cannot cut down a city/public owned tree that is blocking your sewer....there are rules to follow. In situations where the property owner requests in writing the removal of city owned trees for the reason of sewer line blockage, a representative of the Forestry Branch will inspect the tree(s) and make a decision.  City owned trees are rarely removed for the reason of sewer line blockage. The City of Winnipeg only removes trees when they are dead, diseased, dying, involved in approved permitted construction or are visibility or safety Hazard.
